A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against Malayalam film actress Shwetha Menon based on a complaint alleging that she acted in films and advertisements that are obscene and vulgar in nature for financial gain. Shwetha Menon has been booked under Section 67A of the Information Technology Act, 2000 which is related to dealing with punishment for publishing or transmitting sexually explicit material in the electronic forms.
Many members of the film industry have condemned the FIR filed against the actress and questioned the credibility of the case. The case registered by the Ernakulam Central Police coincides with her candidacy for the post of President of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), scheduled for August 15, 2025. The former AMMA President, Mohanlal, resigned in 2024 after allegations of sexual harassment emerged against some of the organisation’s members following the Hema Committee report.
Shwetha Menon expressed on her social media that the FIR against her could be part of a larger conspiracy. She added, "It may be a handiwork of somebody whose wish to head the organisation had failed to materialise. Such a conspiracy was plotted against actor Kukku Parameswaran, who is contesting for the post of General Secretary.”
Malayalam actor Raveendran, who is also contesting for the post of General Secretary of AMMA, called the allegations “baseless.” He further stated, “The association would jointly oppose any move to defame members on the basis of such baseless allegations. An inquiry should be conducted into how this complaint emerged, as it was done with malicious intent.”
The case against the Kalimannu actress was registered following a complaint filed by social worker Martin Menachery, who alleged that Shwetha Menon acted in obscene and vulgar films and advertisements for profit. According to the complaint, the actress has been accused of making money and boosting her popularity by circulating such content through social media and adult websites.
The 51-year-old actress has been booked under Section 67A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, and Sections 3 and 5 of the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956.
Shwetha Menon has filed a petition in the Kerala High Court on August 7, 2025, seeking a stay on the FIR registered against her.
In the petition, the actress asserts that she is a respected artist in the Malayalam film industry and that all the allegations against her are entirely baseless and unsupported by any proper evidence. She further affirms that all the films and advertisements she has featured in were duly censored, certified, and publicly accessible for years. Additionally, Shwetha claimed that the allegations were “politically motivated” and intended to create obstacles for her presidential candidacy in AMMA. [Rh/VS]
