Most car owners in India renew their policy once a year, glance at the premium amount, and feel mildly annoyed if it has gone up. But they miss asking why the number looks the way it does. A car insurance premium is not picked out of thin air. It is built up from a fairly specific set of factors, some fixed by the regulator and some decided by the insurer. Understanding them can help you bring your own premium down instead of accepting whatever shows up on the renewal notice.

Third Party Cover vs Comprehensive Cover

The first thing that decides your premium is the type of policy itself. One is third party insurance, which is mandatory under Indian law. It generally covers any damage or injury you cause to another person or their vehicle.

Another one is comprehensive which covers damage to your own car from fire, theft, accidents, or natural disasters. It also provides third-party liability for property damage or injuries.

Insured Declared Value (IDV)

For comprehensive and own-damage cover, the single largest driver of your premium is the Insured Declared Value. It’s the current market value of your car and is calculated by taking the manufacturer's listed price and a depreciation percentage based on the car's age.

A higher IDV means a higher premium, and a lower IDV lowers the premium. However, the latter also reduces the amount you would receive in a total loss claim.

This is why many insurer websites let you slide the IDV up or down and watch the premium change instantly through a car insurance premium calculator. That’s because it shows this relationship far more clearly than reading about it.

Engine Capacity and Vehicle Type

Cars with bigger engines are more expensive to repair and generally cost more to insure. That applies both to third-party insurance and comprehensive insurance.

SUVs and premium sedans usually attract a higher premium than a basic hatchback of similar age. That’s simply because their spare parts and body panels cost more to replace in most cases. It is always recommended to speak to an agent to analyze the actual cost related to the vehicle you have.

Location and Registration Details

The price calculation also depends on how an insurer categorizes various cities or towns based on risk zones. They decide it on the basis of certain factors like traffic density, accident frequency, and theft rates.

It further depends on whether the location of the person is in a metro city with heavy traffic or a smaller town. A car that has been registered in a location with more claims filed against it carries a slightly higher premium than the one registered in a quieter area.

Vehicle Age and No Claim Bonus (NCB)

A car’s IDV drops as it gets older, which on its own would reduce the premium. Older cars also have a lot of mechanical issues and may get into accidents, so insurers adjust for this too.

What actually makes the changes is NCB that accrues each year you pass without filing any claim. It begins a modest percentage in the first claim-free year and climbs steadily with each additional year. Later, this number reaches a substantial discount on the own-damage premium.

However, the NCB is reset to zero the moment you make a claim. That is why many owners prefer to pay for small repairs out of pocket.

Add-on Covers

Beyond the base policy, every add-on you select adds its own cost.

Zero depreciation cover, which waives the depreciation deduction on parts during a claim, is popular for newer cars and adds a noticeable amount to the premium.

Engine protection cover, roadside assistance, and coverage for consumables such as nuts, bolts, and engine oil are common examples, too.

None of these are compulsory, and choosing only the ones relevant to your situation is one of the simplest ways to control your final premium without weakening your basic protection.

Occasional Discounts

A few discounts are worth actively asking for. Fitting an approved anti-theft device can reduce your premium slightly. Being a member of a recognized automobile association sometimes qualifies for a small discount. A voluntary deductible is the one where you agree to pay a fixed amount out of pocket before the insurer steps in. It also helps lower the premium in exchange for taking on a little risk on your side.

The Bottom Line

None of the factors that we discussed in this guide work in isolation. And this is where a car insurance premium calculator comes in. It lets you enter your car's details, adjust the IDV, add or remove covers, and see the actual number change in real time. This is far more useful than trying to estimate the effect of each factor in your head.

If your premium feels higher, running your details through a calculator from a couple of different insurers and comparing the breakdown is the fastest way to spot whether the price is justified.
