In a shocking display of daylight violence, gangster and convicted murderer Chandan Mishra was brutally assassinated on the morning of July 17, 2024, inside the ICU of Paras HMRI Hospital, one of Patna's most high-end medical facilities. The leader of the hit squad, a young man identified as Tauseef Badshah, strode into the hospital with terrifying calm, gun in hand, his face unmasked, and executed Mishra in cold blood.

A Daring Entry and Ruthless Murder
At around 7:15 a.m., Tauseef, along with six associates, arrived at Paras Hospital on two motorcycles. Armed and focused, five of them walked directly into the facility, while one stayed outside to monitor the surroundings. Security guards attempted to stop them at the emergency gate, demanding gate passes, but the group slipped in through the Outpatient Department (OPD), bypassing checks and heading straight for Room 209—the ICU room where Mishra lay under medical parole.

CCTV footage, now circulating widely, shows the attackers moving swiftly and silently through the corridor. At the front was Tauseef, walking slowly with a pistol visibly in his right hand. His demeanor was chilling—no mask, no hesitation. Seconds later, the sound of gunfire rang through the hospital. Mishra, under police watch and recovering in the ICU, was riddled with bullets. By the time security and hospital staff responded, the attackers had vanished into the chaos outside.

Police believe this was no impulsive act but a highly organized, well-planned execution rooted in a longstanding gangland feud. The attackers, reportedly familiar with the hospital layout, had conducted prior reconnaissance. They knew Mishra's exact location and exploited a faulty lock on Room 209 to gain easy entry.

The attackers fled the scene on motorcycles, with two of them captured in photographs celebrating the act—one brandishing a pistol, another raising both hands in triumph. By 8:00 a.m., less than an hour after the murder, Patna Police had identified the assailants using hospital surveillance footage. Tauseef Badshah, Mannu, Surajbhan, and Bhindi alias Balwant Singh—all from Buxar district—were named. So far, six suspects have been detained from Patna and Buxar, and raids are underway.

On the Left side is Chandan Mishra and on the right side is Sheru.

Chandan Mishra, 36, hailed from Buxar district and was a notorious gangster with 24 criminal cases, including 12 murders, to his name. He had been serving a life sentence in Beur Jail but was temporarily released on parole for medical treatment. Despite his criminal background, his execution in such a high-security environment has raised major concerns over Bihar’s law and order situation.

The alleged mastermind behind the killing, Tauseef Badshah, is a resident of Phulwari Sharif, Patna. He comes from a seemingly respectable background—his father owns a hardware business and his mother is a schoolteacher. A former student of Saint Karen’s School, Tauseef had no known early ties to crime but had recently plunged into the world of organized contract killings. He had been previously booked under the Arms Act and was reportedly involved in several underworld operations, either executing murders or arranging logistics.

Investigators believe the motive behind the murder was tied to a long-standing gang rivalry between Chandan Mishra and another gangster named Sheru. Once allies in Bhagalpur jail, the two had a bitter fallout. Chandan later began operating independently, though he still branded his group under the "Sheru Gang" label. Tauseef is suspected to have been acting on behalf of Sheru or other rivals seeking revenge for past betrayals.

Political Storm in Bihar
The audacious nature of the attack has sparked a political firestorm. RJD leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav slammed the Nitish Kumar-led government, posting on X. He wrote that the authority of the police is destroyed, officers have become powerless, gangsters are victorious, and criminals are now emperors. Also wrote about how the criminal shot someone inside a hospital without fear.

Independent MP Rajesh Ranjan, alias Pappu Yadav, alleged he received a threatening call warning him to back off from the case and demanded the imposition of President’s Rule in the state.

Meanwhile, Inspector General (Central Range) Jitendra Rana confirmed that the role of hospital security guards is under investigation. "It cannot be ruled out that the security guards were involved. We will investigate this angle as well," he said.

With more than 50 murders reported in Bihar over the past 26 days, the brutal killing of Chandan Mishra has once again exposed the fragile state of law and order in the state and the growing boldness of criminal gangs.
