New Delhi: Former Union Minister V Narayanasamy found himself in a fix after videos and images showing him holding slippers to enable Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi wear them in flood-hit Puducherry went viral on Tuesday.

Narayanasamy later sought to clear the air on the issue saying that he did that out of courtesy to help his party top leader wade through a flooded street in the Union Territory.

Gandhi was in Puducherry and Tamil Nadu on Tuesday to tour flood-hit regions where he was accompanied by regional Congress leaders, including Narayanasamy.

A video that is doing the rounds of social media shows Narayanasamy – slightly bent – and holding a pair of slippers for Gandhi so that he could put them on.

It was reported that the former Union Minister of State during UPA-II was allegedly holding Gandhi's slippers.

"It was not Rahul Gandhi's slippers, it was mine and I was holding it for him to wear out of courtesy so that he could walk through a flooded neighbourhood," Narayanasamy said.

"Rahulji was wearing shoes and he had to remove it as the street was flooded. As he got ready to walk barefoot, I offered mine as the flooded street had thorns and rough stones," he said, adding that "I followed Rahulji by wearing another pair of slippers given to me by a party worker."
