According to writer Yasser Usman, author of Rekha: The Untold Story, Rekha shares a mysterious relationship with Farzana Jaffery. She is the only person allowed in Rekha’s bedroom. Everyone in the film fraternity knows Rekha never moves without her.

What is the relationship between Rekha and Farzana?

Rekha’s relationship with Farzana evolved over the years. Farzana started her career as an assistant director but soon realised it wasn’t her cup of tea. In an interview with Masala, Yasser Usman revealed that Farzana’s father was a production controller and, when she first entered the industry, she wanted to be a director. She assisted in some films but eventually decided it wasn’t for her. She then got in touch with Rekha and became her secretary-cum-manager in the mid-80s. This began an association that has lasted for 30 years. Yasser added that there was a time when Farzana’s mother was sick, so she would attend to her in the morning and then rush to Rekha — “she has literally given her life for Rekha.” Today, it is impossible to reach Rekha without going through Farzana.

When Rekha’s husband died by suicide, even though his note stated that no one was responsible. The whole nation was ready to blame her. During this difficult period, Farzana remained by her side. A trusted aide, a pillar of strength, a staunch supporter, and much more. Always dressed in smart suits and sporting a short hairdo, Farzana never shies away from stepping into the shadows respectfully while Rekha enjoys the spotlight. And as soon as the flashlights stop, she is quick to take charge and lead the way for Rekha. After an excerpt, credited to Yasser Usman, claimed that Rekha and Farzana were in a relationship went viral. The netizens quickly speculated that the actress was in a live-in romance with her manager. The alleged excerpt stated:

"Farzana is a perfect partner for Rekha. She is her consultant, her friend, and her supporter, and Rekha simply can't live without her. In fact, only Rekha's trusted secretary Farzana who some have claimed is her lover is permitted inside her bedroom, not even domestic help are allowed entry.”

However, Yasser discredited this and objected to the use of the term live-in. He clarified and criticised the speculation in a statement:

Rekha has always been an open book, known for giving some of the most entertaining interviews and often appearing transparent on camera. In one of her appearances on Rendezvous with Simi Garewal, when Simi Garewal asked if she was planning to get married again, Rekha, with her trademark wit, replied, “To a man?” When Simi further asked “Well, not a woman, obviously?” with a playful smile, Rekha added, “Why not?” 

Rekha seems to have had a life filled with both admiration and controversy, with various speculations and allegations trailing her. This relationship remains one such rumour.
