The World Population Review data suggests that in the United States of America, the infidelity rate is nearly 35%, with Thailand leading at 51%. Infidelity is commonly viewed as a form of emotional or physical cheating, or a violation of trust, by people in an exclusive relationship.

While its meaning is not confined to a single definition, the practice varies and can be subjective. In a populous country like India, where more than 12.5 crore marriages take place every year, infidelity, even emotional cheating has never been an open subject of discourse.

But the ground reality is often far from one’s imagination.

In 2024, a poll was conducted to study the complexities of marriages, infidelity, and relationships. The sample for the poll consisted of 1,503 Indians from Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities. The study concluded that Indians are slowly shifting their perspective on marriage and are even rejecting the idea of monogamous partnerships.

It further stated that more than 60% of Indians have tried swinging, a sexual activity in which people in a relationship swap their partners and engage with others in a sexual manner.
