Amarnath Yatra performed by 1,87,903 Pilgrims so far

A batch of over 1,500 pilgrims left Jammu city for Kashmir Valley to perform the Amarnath Yatra, taking number of yatris to 1,87,903 on Thursday.

“Another batch of over 1,500 yatris left the Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas in Jammu city on Thursday for the valley,” a senior police official told IANS.

“The yatris left in a convoy escorted by the security forces.”

According to Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) officials, as many as 5,135 pilgrims had ‘Darshan’ inside the Cave Shrine on Wednesday since this year’s Yatra started on July 2.

The ‘Charri Mubarak’ (Lord Shiva’s Mace) will now be taken to the Cave Shrine after its stopovers at Chandanwari, Pissu Top, Sheshnag and Panchtarni enroute to the Cave after the traditional Puja was held at Pahalgam on Wednesday.

The 48-day Yatra will conclude on August 17 coinciding with Shravan Purnima and Raksha Bandhan festivals.

This year, 12 pilgrims died due to natural causes while performing the Yatra.

In comparison to last year, only 1,87,903 Yatris have performed the pilgrimage this year.

Last year over 2,65,000 pilgrims had performed the Yatra during the same period. (IANS)

Fresh snowfall occurred in the Kashmir Valley on Friday as the weather office said that inclement weather would continue in the state till Sunday.

“Light snowfall in the plains and moderate to heavy in the higher reaches occurred in the today. Weather is expected to remain inclement during the next 72 hours and this is likely to affect air and surface transport to and from the valley,” a MET Department official said.

Very few people moved out of their homes on Friday morning in Srinagar city and elsewhere as a white blanket of snow covered rooftops, roads and open spaces.

Srinagar recorded minus 1.0 degrees Celsius, Pahalgam minus 3.0 and Gulmarg minus 7.5 as the minimum temperatures on Friday.

Leh town recorded minus 9.5 degrees Celsius, while Drass was the coldest in the state with minus 15.2. Thursday’s maximum temperature in Drass was minus 9.1 degrees Celsius.
