ON SEPTEMBER 7, 1996, rap icon Tupac Shakur was murdered in Las Vegas, US. But the case never found its way of resolution until August 31, 2026. A jury found and charged Duane “Keefe D” Davis of orchestrating the murder of the rapper. The 63-year-old was convicted of a single count of murder with a brutal weapon and now will serve a life sentence in prison. After a week-long trial in Las Vegas, the jury found a way to come to this conclusion in less than 3 hours.

A Case that Took Decades is Now on Every Hip-Hop Fans’ Radar

A decades-old murder case has emerged again and got all of its attention from the fans across the globe. Tupac Shakur was regarded as one of the most influential rappers of all time but was shot and later succumbed to his death days later on September 13, 2026. For years, the rapper’s death remained unresolved until Davis came to the picture. His public statements described that he was present in the Cadillac and passed down the guns to the other members sitting in the backseat. The car pulled up beside Tupac when it stopped at the red light and fired shots at him from the inside. A personal beef from before when Tupac was involved in beating of Davis’s nephew. The only one alive who was in the Cadillac car was Davis out of the four men.

Mob Piru, a Los Angeles gang and Davis’ Southside Compton Crips had a rivalry back in the day. The rivalry led to Shakur’s death and the gangs began to affiliate themselves with the Knight’s Death Row Records and Sean “Diddy” Combs’ Bad Boy Records. Prosecutors said that Davis though was the leader of the Southside Compton Crips gang but was not the one who shot. Instead ordered his nephew Orlando Anderson to open fire at Shakur. Anderson denied his involvement in the shooting and later died in 1998 in a shoot-out. 

Finally a verdict was read out on Monday, August 31, 2026. The family of Tupac Shakur were seen crying and hugging each other. Shakur’s life was short-lived but left a huge mark on every rapper alive today, he was at the height of his career at just the age of 25 and already sold more than 75 million records worldwide. The case took 30 years that remains America’s one of the most famous cases that remained unresolved until now.

Davis was in the Picture for Long Since 2008

The breakthrough in the case came from Davis’ own words, when he described his role to the authorities in a police interview that took place in 2008. The interview was related to the death of another famous rapper Notorious B.I.G. Again in 2019, Davis gave more details on his role during Compton Street Legend’s memoir. But giving the agreement that he had with the media and book blocked chances of filing  any criminal charges. The court ruled his interviews and statements out.

During the closing arguments, Binu Palal, the prosecutor, argued the jurors to take Davis’s word and take him for a criminal who is guilty of Tupac’s murder. Palal tried to persuade the court and signalled them that Davis is responsible for the death of the rapper cleared through the documentaries, interviews, memoirs and podcasts. Palal said, “He’s the shot caller - in every instance in every iteration he’s the leader of the South Side Crips.”

“When you have the shot caller sitting shotgun when  shots are fired, there’s no doubt he’s responsible.”

Davis’ defence team did their best to convince the jurors of his innocence and that the story seems fictional and fabricated to earn money. But after taking hours to land a verdict, the jury decided to rule Davis out as guilty. Clark County District Court Judge Carli Kierny sentenced Davis for October, 13, 2026. Davis interrupted during the procedural steps and asked for an appeal to which the judge explained that it could happen only after the sentencing. According to the Clark County District Attorney Steven Wolfson, Davis faces a minimum of 40 years in prison, and the prosecutors won’t be adding any gang enhancements to his sentence after looking at his age. The verdict made Shakur’s sister, Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur cry and hugged the prosecutors while Davis’ son was in disbelief. Tupac’s murder case has finally seen a light after decades of halt, and after this verdict people can expect a closed chapter to one of the most cold-cases in America.
