Expressing concern over the behaviour of policemen towards complainants, the Supreme Court of India on Wednesday ordered Delhi Police to install CCTV cameras in every police station in the capital within two months.

The Delhi Police Commissioner will make sure that CCTV cameras get installed at prominent places in every police station in Delhi within the given time, said that bench of Chief Justice H L Dattu and Justice S A Bobde.

The bench fixed the matter for hearing on May 11 and stated that, "Let them (police) file an affidavit and tell us if they have installed CCTV cameras. And if they have done so, how many of them are actually functional. The report by the commissioner shall contain this information clearly."The court asked the Delhi Police to include details of cameras already installed in the stations and how many of them are functional in the report.

Notably, in April 2014, a woman lawyer from the apex court was allegedly mistreated by some policemen inside a police station in the national capital.

Also, the letter of Mahalakshmi Pavani, another woman advocate, caused the court to take suo-moto cognizance of the incident and asked for an explanation from the Delhi Police.
