UP: Two police officers suspended for setting a woman on fire

Lucknow: Two Uttar Pradesh police officials were suspended on Monday after a woman accused them of setting her on fire after a failed attempt to rape her at a police station.

The woman, aged 40, was admitted in a Lucknow hospital with serious burn injuries.

The woman said she met the officials – station house officer, Rai Saheb Yadav and sub-inspector, Akhilesh – at the police station in Barabanki district on Sunday to inquire about her husband who had been detained.

She told senior officials that when she pleaded with Yadav and Akhilesh that her husband was innocent, they tried to rape her. When she raised an alarm, they doused her with kerosene and set her on fire.

The woman was reportedly rescued by her son and taken to hospital.

Lucknow Inspector General of Police Zaki Ahmad told a media outlet that the two officials had been suspended and an investigation has been ordered into the woman's allegations.
