THE DATING GAME in today's digital-first world is certainly peculiar yet fascinating. With a plethora of dating and hookup apps — like tinder, bumble, and Grindr — making major headways in the Indian market, there's an app to address every person’s choice and needs. Not just for dating and hookups, there's even platforms for those seeking life-long commitment and marriage, with the availability of matrimonial matchmaking apps like Shaadi.com.

Across Indian states, the popularity of dating, hookups, and marriage apps differ. A latest report by India in Pixels — a media channel and digital storytelling platform — mapped which app is most common in which states, using google search intent data from 2021-26.

Showing a strong regional contrast, the color-coded map represents an overview of how four apps — Grindr, Shaadi.com, Tinder, and Bumble are used across Indian states.

As per India in Pixels data, Tinder is more popular in north-eastern states, with the most search intent reported in SikkimX/@indiainpixels

Tinder is the world’s most popular online dating app. Via its ‘swipe-to-match’ interface, users can reject or choose which person to want to talk or to date. As per India in Pixels data, Tinder is more popular in north-eastern states, with the most search intent reported in Sikkim, followed by Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Assam. In southern India, Goa and Andaman and Nicobar Islands are major users, while in northern India, Delhi seems to be quite the avid user of Tinder.

Bumble

Bumble is another such dating app very similar to Tinder. However, its one distinguishing feature is that it is a women-first platform, meaning women are required to make the first move in heterosexual matches. In India, southern states are the topmost users of Bumble, with Karnataka being the most popular, followed by Maharashtra and Goa. Delhi too is trailing behind Karnataka in usage. One surprising outlier in this category is Haryana, wherein Bumble is recorded to have major popularity.

Grindr

Grindr serves a particular type of users — those belonging to the LGBTQ+ community. Launched in 2009, this app is the world’s largest dating app catering to gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and other queer identities. Grindr uses real-time global positioning system (GPS)  based data to show profiles that have geographical proximity. Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, followed by Puducherry and Tamil Nadu are the biggest users of Grindr all over India. Goa, Nagaland, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands also record significant users of the LGBTQ+ dating app.

Shaadi.com

The least surprising dataset in this data series is the statistics of  Shaadi.com. As in India, either due to personal choice or familial pressure,  many decide to ditch dating altogether and go straight to marriage, it is not surprising that the usage of this matrimonial matchmaking app is dispersed across all Indian states, though some regions report to have more users comparatively. The highest popularity is reported in Delhi, followed by Maharashtra and Punjab. Many northern states and some southern ones more or less use Shaadi.com in the same capacity.

India in Pixels clarified that Google Trends measures relative search interest rather than actual user numbers. Even so, the viral data maps offer an interesting glimpse into the diverse relationship cultures across Indian states — where arranged marriages and app-based dating often coexist side by side.
