The scope of biodiversity is far greater than most people can imagine. There are incredible chicken breeds found in various parts of the world. One of the most eye-catching is the Ayam Cemani, a chicken with jet-black feathers. Also known as the “Lamborghini chicken,” this rare bird gets its name from the Indonesian language—‘Ayam’ means chicken, and ‘Cemani’ means black.
This rare breed of chicken originated from Kedu Village, Temanggung City, Java Island (Indonesia). The popular nickname “Lamborghini chicken” is given to this chicken because of its rarity and prized status.
According to reports, the chicken costs around $6,000, which is 5 lakh INR. The chicken has long been the object of fascination, which has resulted in an increase in its demand as well as the interest of other countries in breeding them.
The Ayam Cemani is not the only chicken that has black feathers, but what makes it different from others is that the inky colour extends to its beak, tongue, claws, eyes, bones, and organs. This happens because of a condition called fibromelanosis, or dermal hyperpigmentation. This is a genetic condition in chickens, particularly notable in Silkie and Dongxiang breeds, causing excessive melanin production and resulting in dark coloration of the skin, connective tissues, and internal organs.
This chicken’s meat is a culinary speciality, as it has distinctive flavours, and the chicken’s black colour bestows the ingredients with remarkable visual appeal. The eggs of the bird are also treasured items and sell for a staggering amount of money.
However, in Java, the bird is a part of many rituals. Ayam Cemani have a deep spiritual and mystical significance in Java. Because of their pitch-black coloration, many locals believe that they have supernatural powers, making them a very popular choice for offerings and blessings in Java. Among collectors and enthusiasts, owning an Ayam Cemani is considered a social status symbol. Rh/VP
