A system of seven satellites called the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) is being put into orbit by ISRO to provide positioning and navigational services in Indian mainland and surrounding regions.

The project which will cover a region up to 1500 kms, consists of three geostationary and four geosynchronous satellites with an accuracy that is better than 20 meters.

Out of the seven, three satellites, IRNSS 1A, 1B & 1C have been successfully placed in the orbit, fourth,IRNSS 1D, is set for departure in March 2015 and the rest are being worked upon. IRNSS will provide Standard Positioning Service (SPS) for Civilian users and Restricted Service (RS) for strategic users.
