A Mirage-2000 fighter jet of Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully landed on the Yamuna Expressway on Thursday. The exercise was a part of trials to use national highways for emergency landings.

"The IAF has been considering the use of national highways for emergency landing by fighter aircrafts," an IAF official said, as reported by IANS.

The official added that the capability was displayed by the Mirage-2000, which got airborne from a base in 'central India'.

"The exercise was done in coordination with district administration of Agra and Mathura, and all necessary security preparations were in place", reported IANS.

As per media reports, a stretch of the Agra-Lucknow expressway in Uttar Pradesh is set to become a road runway for fighter jets of the Indian Air Force (IAF). This will be a first one for military aviation in the country.

Reportedly, IAF will also bear the expenditure of the project.
