Five people died during booth capturing in UP

Lucknow: At least five people died on Tuesday during the second phase of polling for gram pradhans (village heads) in Uttar Pradesh, as per the statements received from officials.

More than a dozen incidents of violence marred the polling.

During a booth capturing attempt in Gonda, an elderly person was shot dead. A woman was also killed in the violence.

In Meerut, two sects of the Muslim community fought pitched battles with each other while three policemen, including a senior official, were injured in Bahraich in a stone pelting incident.

An election officer and a home guard died during the polling following heart attacks.

The firing was also reported from Kishni in Mainpuri, Sikanderpur village in Firozabad and in Rewari.

Supporters of contestants fought with each other at a booth in Pilibhit, leaving four people injured.

Violence was also reported from Budayun, Aligarh, Shahjahanpur, Meerut, Gonda and Balrampur.
