Actress Roopa Ganguly of ‘Draupadi’ Fame gets nominated to Rajya Sabha

October 4, 2016: Roopa Ganguly, the actress-turned-politician and a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party has been nominated to the Rajya Sabha.

The actress who is well known for playing the role of Draupadi in 1988 epic TV series, 'Mahabharat' contested in the recently concluded assembly elections in West Bengal but lost to cricketer-turned-politician Laxmi Ratan Shukla.

The BJP's women's wing is headed by Ganguly in West Bengal. She had joined the party in January 2015.

Apart from 'Mahabharat', the actress is well-known for many other television serials due to her roles in serials like 'Karam Apnaa Apnaa' and 'Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo'.

She has acted in Hindi as well as Bengali films like Goutam Ghosh's 'Padma Nadir Majhi', Aparna Sen's 'Yugant' and Rituparno Ghosh's 'Antarmahal'.
She bagged the National Film Award in the best playback singer category for the Bengali film 'Abosheshey' (At the End of It All).

Ganguly is nominated for the seat vacated by the cricketer turned politician Navjot Singh Sidhu, who have recently resigned it.

The government had nominated Subramanian Swamy, Narendra Jadhav, Navjot Singh Sidhu, Suresh Gopi, Swapan Dasgupta and Mary Kom as new Rajya Sabha members, in April.

In May, Pranav Pandya was also nominated, head of All World Gayatri Pariwar, as Rajya Sabha member but he declined it. Government nominated Sambhaji Raje, a descendant of Shivaji was nominated to the Rajya Sabha, in his place.
