Scarborough, June 01, 2017: A Hindu temple in Scarborough, Canada is allowed to continue services in a Birchmount Road warehouse until its permanent home is rebuilt, the Ontario Municipal Board has decided.

The city of Toronto shut down Canada Kanthaswamy Temple Society's use of 1380 Birchmount last November by issuing an unsafe building order banning mass gathering in the building, which includes worship, recreation and classroom teaching.

The society and the property's manager, Doverhold Investments, were denied an appeal to allow worship there for up to three years.

A temple is being constructed by the society at 733 Birchmount, and the construction would be finished by March 31, 2018.

In a decision issued on May 15, board member David Lanthier said the short length of stay — 11 months — "factors significantly" in his conclusion the changes should be allowed.

He further said, the building should be fully available for industrial use in the Toronto's employment areas.

Scarborough Centre Coun, Michael Thompson, said he's not happy with the decision and described it as a compromise. "The place has not been altered dramatically," he added last week.
