Future of Skincare & Solar Innovation: The Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study (HKIAS) hosted a Distinguished Lecture Series on February 20, 2025, featuring Professor Reinhold H. Dauskardt from Stanford University. A globally recognized expert in materials science, mechanical engineering, and skin biomechanics, Professor Dauskardt delivered two insightful talks covering cutting-edge skin research and advancements in solar technology.

The first talk, titled "Structure, Function and Biomechanics of Human Skin: Sex Differences, Cosmetic Formulations and Sensorial Perception," explored the complex relationship between skincare products and skin biology. Professor Dauskardt presented pioneering research on how different ingredients interacted within skincare formulations to influence skin health, perception, and comfort. His team developed a high-fidelity 3D biomechanical model of human skin, shedding light on sensorial perception mechanisms and the neural processes behind softness and comfort sensations.

A key highlight of his talk was the sex-based differences in water diffusion kinetics in human skin, which had significant implications for skincare product design. These insights paved the way for more personalized and effective cosmetic formulations tailored to individual needs.

Transitioning to renewable energy, Professor Dauskardt’s second talk, "Open-Air Spray-Plasma Manufacturing of Large-Area Perovskite Solar Cells and Modules," showcased his innovative approach in scalable, cost-effective solar technology. His research team pioneered a novel open-air plasma process that enabled rapid, solvent-free deposition of perovskite solar cells and modules. This could significantly reduce manufacturing costs while enhancing efficiency and stability. The lecture also covered technoeconomic modeling and long-term durability factors, offering a glimpse into the future of affordable, high-performance solar energy solutions.

Professor Reinhold H. Dauskardt holds the Ruth G. and William K. Bowes Professorship at Stanford University and is a distinguished researcher in materials science, biomechanics, and nanotechnology. His contributions to skin science and solar energy research have earned him numerous accolades, including the IFSCC Best Applied Research Award (2022) and the Alexander von Humboldt Research Award (2002).
