For the study, the team involved a small yet significant number of participants who took a probiotic capsule twice a day for six days and then took two days off. They then repeated the cycle.

Probiotics may significantly improve the symptoms of pregnancy-related nausea, vomiting and constipation, finds a new study.

The study, published in the journal Nutrients, showed that nausea hours (the number of hours participants felt nauseous) were reduced by 16 per cent, and the number of times they vomited was reduced by 33 per cent.

s one inches closer to their due date, often patience runs out and you may be ready to try everything possible to help induce labour naturally.

37 or 38 weeks pregnant, the finishing line seems so close yet so far. As one inches closer to their due date, often patience runs out and you may be ready to try everything possible to help induce labour naturally. Most women choose to speed things up naturally with food choices. Some look at these food groups as old wives' tales since there is limited evidence to prove these are hundred per cent successful in aiding labour.

  • Red Raspberry Leaf
Red raspberry leaf is known to help strengthen the uterus muscles and tone the pelvic floor- both of which can help prepare for the process of birth. Studies have revealed that red raspberry leaves can help shorten labour and decrease the likelihood of a C-section or chances of an assisted birth using forceps/vacuum. These leaves are commonly consumed in the form of tea by brewing the leaves in boiling water and then consuming the same. Since raspberry leaves can increase the frequency of Braxton hick's contractions, it is recommended to consume these past 34 weeks.

Contracting Covid-19 infection during pregnancy can increase the risk of premature birth by 60 per cent. The study, led by researchers from the University of California-San Francisco, showed that pregnant women who test positive for virus were more likely to deliver their baby 37 weeks or earlier, the Daily Mail reported.

Researchers also found that Asian women (240 per cent more likely to give birth very preterm) and American Indian women (170 per cent more likely to give birth preterm) were most likely to experience a premature birth.

However, the biological reason why Covid can cause preterm births is not known yet. The study, published in The Lancet Regional Health, included data from more than 240,000 birth from July 2020 to January 2021. Nearly 9,000 women had tested positive for the virus at some point during their pregnancy, while the rest made up a control group, the report said.

Some even had very preterm births, in which a baby is born less than 32 weeks into pregnancy. The risk of preterm or early term delivery after Covid infection was between 10 per cent and 40 per cent, the report said. Diabetes and obesity also increased the risk of premature birth.

Premature birth could have many long and short term negative effects on a child, including cognitive issues, cerebral palsy and underdeveloped organs.

The team urged pregnant women to get vaccinated against Covid-19 to potentially prevent giving birth prematurely.(IANS/TI)
