A statement from the Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickramesinghe just days ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi`s visit to the island nation has come across as a rude shock to India.

Lankan Prime Minister during an interview to Tamil channel Thanthi TV said that the navy has the right to shoot any Indian fisherman found on their country`s waters and there is no question of violation of human rights in that.

Talking to the Tamil channel Thanthi TV, the Sri Lankan Prime Minister said that if the Indian fishermen don`t trespass the international boundary, this problem will not arise. Adding a biting comment about India detaining Italian marines, he said, ' India says it is friendly with Italy, show that same magnanimity to Italy that it wants us to show.'

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj whois in Sri Lanka told Sri Ranil Wickramasinghe that the fishermen issue and Italian marines issue are two different issues.

Swaraj will also talk with her counterpart Malngala Samarawnmeera about the release of 86 fishermen arrested this week for trespassing into Lankan waters.

Reportedly, seven Indian fishermen have also been abducted by armed Sri Lankan fishermen today.
