No more reservation for Jats under OBC quota: Supreme Court

In a recent development, Supreme Court has quashed an earlier notification under which Jat community was granted OBC reservation in nine states.

The apex court on Tuesday quashed the March 4, 2014, notification under which the then UPA government had extended OBC reservation to Jats by ignoring the recommendation of the National Commission for Backward Classes.

An apex court bench of Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman said: "We can't agree that politically organised Jats are backward class so as to be entitled to OBC reservation."

"Inclusion of politically organised class such as Jats… can't be affirmed", said Justice Gogoi pronouncing the judgment.

Jat leaders express shock

Jat leaders in Rajasthan expressed shock on Supreme Court's veridct. A prominent Jat leader Gyanparakash Pilania said., "We are shocked. Though I have not gone through the judgement, Jats are synonymous with farmers and I feel farmers are backward and deserve to get reservation"

Rajasthan Congress leader Rameshwar Dudi insisted that Jats were "really backward" in Rajasthan and they deserve to get reservation.

Jats account for 14-15 percent of the state's population.
