New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid tributes to Swami Vivekananda on his 112th death anniversary, saying he was an "enduring source of inspiration" for the people across the globe.

"I bow to Swami Vivekananda on his Nirvan Diwas. He is an enduring source of inspiration whose thoughts influenced several people globally," Modi wrote in his Twitter handle.

Swami Vivekananda, the founder of Ramakrishna Math and the Ramakrishna Mission, was a key figure in the introduction of the Indian philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga to the western world.

He was also credited with raising interfaith awareness, bringing Hinduism to the status of a major world religion during the 19th century.

He died on 4 July, 1902.
