Hurriyat leaders arrested ahead of NSA talks, released the same day

Syed Ali Shah Geelani and leaders of the moderate faction Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Moulvi Abbas Ansari and JKLF leader Yasin Malik had been placed under house arrest.

A heavy contingent of police was placed around the houses of these prominent leaders a few days prior to the NSA talks. The leaders of both the factions of Hurriyat Conference were invited by Sartaj Aziz for a meeting in Delhi before the latter would speak to Indian National Security Advisor, Ajit Doval.

Hurriyat (M) spokesman, Sahid –ul – Islam told Indian Express that police has lifted the cordon around the house of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. "Now there are no restrictions. We don't know why the decision has been taken,'' he said

Omar Abdullah, former J&K CM has out rightly condemned CM Mufti Mohammed Sayeed for arresting the separatist leaders prior to their meeting with Sartaj Aziz. He tweeted, "shame on Mufti Syed for arresting on demand. He had no business following his masters orders & detaining the Hurriyat leaders like this."

In 2014, India had called off talks with Pakistan because of Hurriyat's involvement. However, the NSA talk this time is still scheduled on its decided day.
