A curfew was imposed in Jammu's Samba district yesterday evening, following communal clashes.

Due to arson and violence in Raya Morh area in Samba district, army was called during the night to quell the violence. Before that, the police had used lathicharge and teargas shells in order to control the situation. The vehicle of District Magistrate Sheetal Nanda was set on fire by the protesters and other vehicles were smashed too. Many policeman and protesters were injured during the clash.

The protesters alleged that their religious scriptures had been torched inside a factory in Bari Brahmana industrial area.

On Wednesday, some people had blocked the national highway near Bari Brahmana in protest over the burning of some religious books at a local industrial unit. By associating the two incidents, Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Pawan Kotwal, said the incidents appeared to be the handiwork of some anti-national elements who wanted to create trouble in the region.
