Washington: Jeb Bush, who is bidding for Republican candidacy for the White house, on Monday criticized various Asian immigrants for misusing the rules that grant American citizenship to babies who are born in US.
The issue of "anchor babies"- a term that refers to babies that are born to undocumented parents but is considered derogatory by many, has become a raging issue in the election campaign, according to a report in Economic Times.
On Monday, when Bush was responding to questions in Texas, he was asked whether the issue of "anchor babies" would hurt his vote-bank among the Hispanics, he said that, the issue was more related to other immigrants.
He added: ""What I was talking about was the specific case of fraud being committed where there's organized efforts — and frankly it's more related to Asian people coming into our country, having children in that organized effort, taking advantage of a noble concept with birthright citizenship," according to ET report.
Previously, Donald Trump, another Republican hopeful, had proposed scrapping of the 14th amendment that grants citizenship to anybody born in US. He claimed that the law was boosting illegal immigration. He further said that, last year around 300,000 babies had been born to undocumented parents.
