New Delhi: The Jawaharlal Nehru University is considering setting up a School on Indian languages to promote studies and research on the same. The School will offer courses in Hindi, Urdu, Kannada and Assamese among others.

The School of Language, Literature and Cultural Studies in JNU already offers language courses in French, German, Russian, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese and Persian, but none is up for research.

A senior varsity official said, "The university is looking forward to setting up a School of Indian languages which will undertake undertake Masters programmes and research courses in Hindi, Urdu, Kannada, Tamil, Marathi, Assamese Bengali and Oriya languages."

He added that a proposal regarding this had been sent to all the departments and schools under the university for their feedback on the same. "Once the feedbacks are received, the matter will be placed before the Academic Council (AC) for its approval."
