October 1, 2016: Agrasen Jayanti is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of Maharaja Agrasen and this renowned event is observed every year on October 1 by the Agrahari and Agrawal sects of the Hindu community.

Legends has it that, Maharaja Agrasen was known to be the legendary king of Agroha and also the founder of Agrahari as well as the Agrawal communities in India. He is known to be the forefather of this community and therefore the festival is celebrated with full gaiety and devotion in the honour him.

According to the Hindu Calendar, Agrasen Jayanti is observed on the 'Ekam' (1st day) of the Shukla Paksha (the period of the bright fortnight of Moon) during the Hindu month of 'Ashwin'. However, this date falls between the months of September to October in the Gregorian Calendar.

During his time as a King, Maharaja was looked upon with great respect by the people of his Kingdom. Agrasen Jayanti is celebrated with immense zeal across India, especially in the northern states like Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, that are dominated by Agrawal, Agrahari as well as Jain communities.

On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted the country on the occasion of Agrasen Jayanti. "Greetings on Agrasen Jayanti. We are all inspired by the life and ideals of the greatly respected Maharaja Agrasen," the Prime Minister tweeted.
