Mumbai, Dec 6, 2016: In the recently organised 'WeUnite' conference, which marks UN Women's partnership with the IMC Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif delivered some strong words of empowerment.

Katrina highlighted the issues of crimes against women and that how many of them go unreported every year.

According to PTI reports, she said, in a patriarchal society like ours, sometimes even educated women succumb to the societal pressures and refrain from raising their voices against any kind of abuse or crimes committed against them.

NewsGram brings to you latest new stories in India.

Katrina said, "I know of educated women, who remain silent in the face of violence because they are afraid to confront societal norms and have fingers pointed in their direction. Especially, when the majority of our society fails to recognise marital rape as a crime. I would urge more women to speak up. It is not okay to feel inferior or weak, because we are not the weaker sex by any stretch of imagination."
She said, "On a daily basis there are shocking stories about the violent crimes made against women. Yet, I can only imagine how many other crimes against women in India go unreported." It is sad to know that there is gender inequality in a country which had women as the head of the state, she added.

According to the data provided by the national crime records bureau in India- the number of reported crimes against women in 2001 were 1,43,795. In 2005, it were 3,27,394. More than a 100 percent in numbers."

She also emphasised on the fact that women who are not reporting the crimes are getting further victimised by the societal evils. She said, "However I would like to believe that this increase in numbers is not an increase in crime against women. It is increase in number of women who are ready to come forward and reporting them."
