Dark matter and neutrinos, one of the most prevalent particles in the cosmos, show striking similarities, according to researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati.

"Although multiple astrophysical data strongly support it, the lack of any direct evidence of dark matter particles shows it has a very feeble interaction with conventional matter," stated Prof. Arunansu Sil of IIT Guwahati's Department of Physics.

The findings, which were published in the prestigious international journal Physical Review Letters, demonstrated that the creation and development of dark matter are linked to the formation of neutrino mass.

This Standard Model predicts the neutrinos as massless. However, during the late 90's, it was found that neutrinos do have a tiny mass, the exact magnitude of which is still unknown.

Neutrinos are somewhat distinctive from other particles in the Standard Model as it is the only fermion which is of 'left-handed' type, related to its spin projection.
