New Delhi, August 11, 2025 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated 184 Type-VII multi-storey flats for Members of Parliament (MPs) at Baba Kharak Singh Marg in Delhi on Monday. The residential complex, comprising four towers named Krishna, Godavari, Kosi, and Hooghly, aims to address the housing needs of MPs.

Modi, addressing the gathering, stated, “Today I had the fortune of inaugurating the residential complex for my colleagues at the Parliament. The four towers are named- Krishna, Godavari, Kosi, and Hooghly, the four great rivers of India... Some people will feel uncomfortable with Kosi as the name of a tower. They will not view it as a river, but rather through the lens of the Bihar elections.”

The Prime Minister highlighted that the new flats will accommodate over 180 MPs, enabling them to focus on public issues.

He said, “In these multi-storey buildings, more than 180 MPs will live together... Like I previously said, the rent of the ministries functioning from rented buildings would cost the government nearly Rs 1500 crores annually... Similarly, the government expenses were very high in the absence of an adequate number of MP residences. Despite a shortage of MP residences, no new residence was constructed from 2014 to 2024. We took this work as a campaign. Around 350 MP residences have been built since 2014.”

During the ceremony, Modi planted a Sindoor sapling on the premises and interacted with construction workers (sramajeevis)who contributed to the project. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs and Power Manohar Lal, and Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju attended the event, along with other dignitaries.

Located at Baba Kharak Singh Marg, the flats offer proximity to the Parliament House Complex, providing locational advantages for MPs. The project reflects a focus on vertical housing to optimize land use and reduce maintenance costs, given the limited availability of land in the national capital.

The inauguration marks a significant step in addressing the long-standing shortage of MP residences. The government’s initiative to construct approximately 350 residences since 2014 aims to reduce expenses previously incurred due to renting accommodations for MPs. [Rh/Eth/VS]
