Shibu Soren, former Chief Minister of Jharkhand and senior leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), passed away at the age of 81 on the morning of 4 August 2025. He was undergoing treatment for a kidney-related issue at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi. He was declared dead at 8:56 AM.
His son, Hemant Soren, the current Chief Minister of Jharkhand, confirmed the news of his demise on social media platform X.
“Respected Guru Dishom has left us all. Today, I have become a zero..”, he wrote.
Soren had suffered a stroke a month earlier and had been under medical supervision since. He was admitted to the hospital last week as his condition worsened.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences on the death of the veteran leader. In a post on X, he stated, “Shri Shibu Soren Ji was a grassroots leader who rose through the ranks of public life with unwavering dedication to the people. He was particularly passionate about empowering tribal communities, the poor and downtrodden... Spoke to Jharkhand CM Shri Hemant Soren Ji and expressed condolences. Om Shanti.”
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut talked about Shibu Soren's influence, “For the people of Jharkhand, he was no less than a god”, said Raut. He further added, “Two days ago, I was told he was not doing well, and today he has passed away. Uddhav Thackeray and the entire family pay tributes to him. He gave his life for the welfare of the tribal population of his state.”
Born in 1944 in Nemra village of Ramgarh district, Shibu Soren served as the third Chief Minister of Jharkhand. His terms in office included a brief stint from March 2 to March 12 in 2005, followed by two subsequent terms in 2008–2009 and 2009–2010.
In addition to his role as Chief Minister, Soren served as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha beginning in June 2020. He was also appointed as a member of the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Tribal Affairs in October 2024. [Rh/Eth/VS]
