A nine feet tall bronze stature of Mahatma Gandhi has been placed at the center of London's Parliamentary Square. The Gandhi statue which directly faces Britain's Palace of Westminster has statues of Sir Winston Churchill and Nelson Mandela as neighbors.

The statue was unveiled by Indian Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in the presence of British Prime Minister David Cameroon amidst hundreds of spectators.

"This statue is a magnificent tribute to one of the most towering figures in the history of world politics and by putting Mahatma Gandhi in this famous square we are giving him an eternal home in our country," Cameron said.

The sculpture was created by the leading British artist Philip Jackson, who used a photograph of Gandhi outside 10, Downing Street in 1931 as inspiration.

The event was marked by a band playing Indian classical music and waving Indian flags.
