Noddy’s voice goes silent: Susan Sheridan dies at 68

Remember the nodding Noddy or Princess Eilonwy from The Black Couldron? These characters, famous among children and adults alike, came to life after Susan Sheridan gave them her voice.

The British actress whose voice acting

roles included Noddy in the Cosgrove Hall/BBC Television series Noddy's Toyland Adventures, Princess Sylvia in Muzzy in Gondoland, and Princess Eilonwy in the animated film The Black Cauldron, died at the age of 68 on Sunday.

Born in Newcastle, the milestone of her career was "Trillian" in the 1978 Hitchhiker's Guide series. She gave voice to cartoons like Jimbo and the Jet Set, Moomin, The Family Ness, and Animal Shelf.

Recently, she starred in The Kindness of Strangers for Curious Directive at the Norwich Festival and Short Plays By at the Soho Theatre. Her work included BBC's Macbeth with Corin Redgrave, Bless Me Father and a 2012 episode of Midsummer Murders.

The actress had her own voice coaching business – Professional Voice, with her series of mini books and CDs still available in the market.

In her later years, she worked as a voice coach. In 2011, Sheridan appeared at London's Southwark Playhouse in an adaptation of the Japanese animation Howl's Moving Castle.


After completing an MA course in 2009 on Shakespeare Authorship Studies, she was writing a book currently entitled Shaking the Spear which is to be published later this year.
