Mumbai Police Arrest Music Baron Gulshan Kumar’s Murder Accused Abdul Rauf Merchant

Mumbai, November 11, 2016: Abdul Rauf Merchant, a convict in the murder of the music baron Gulshan Kumar who had absconded after jumping parol in the year 2009, was sent to the Arthur Road jail in Mumbai by a Sessions court today, following his re-arrest from the border of India and Bangladesh.

Merchant who is known to be an aide of the fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim, was released on Monday from a prison of Bangladesh.

He was arrested by the Border Security Force from the border in Meghalaya and informed Mumbai Police the reason that brought him here.

According to PTI report, Merchant was produced before the high court at first, and on the direction of the high court, he was then produced before a sessions court in Mumbai, reported a Mumbai Crime Branch official.

The sessions court gave an order to send Merchant to the Arthur Road jail of Mumbai.

He was arrested in the murder case of Gulshan Kumar and was sentenced to life imprisonment in the year 1997.

While he was a prisoner in Aurangabad jail, Merchant absconded when he was released on parole on 2009.

A resident of the Mumbra Township in Thane, Merchant had fled to Bangladesh. But he got arrested there because of carrying fake travel-documents and also for an illegal entry.

Joint Commissioner of Police, (Crime) Sanjay Saxena stated "BSF officials had contacted us regarding Merchant. We sent our team and arrested him. On court's order, we have sent him to Arthur Road jail today. Now the jail authorities will decide which jail he should be kept in for completion of his sentence."
