A humorous, jargon-filled reply from user @sagarcasm prompted Tharoor to break character and respond in Hindi.
The exchange sparked memes and laughter online.

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has finally found a worthy opponent, it seems!
Tharoor, who is known for his unbeatable vocabulary skills, had to write in Hindi while asking for an explanation of an X user’s comment. The internet has spiralled into a frenzy of memes reacting to the hilarious moment from the vocabulary expert.

Shashi Tharoor was responding to US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s recent statement on India’s tariff situation. Bessent stated that India is “a bit recalcitrant” in trade negotiations with America, placing India alongside Switzerland, which is also among the few countries yet to finalise their trade agreement with the US.

Reacting to Bessent’s statement, Shashi Tharoor gave a sharp response that later turned into a light-hearted internet moment. He wrote on X:

“I hear some people are accusing India of being ‘recalcitrant’. I say, far better to be recalcitrant than to be tractable, submissive or acquiescent to injustice.”

Many X users were impressed with his prompt comeback, saying Tharoor had just dropped a “vocabulary bomb” on Bessent.

However, the exchange took an amusing twist when another user, @sagarcasm, replied to Tharoor with a string of complex words:

“That's fine, Shashi, but what about the abnegation of camaraderie in the egregious enfranchise that comes from the fatuous of the grandiloquent at the behest of impecunious and insidious semaphore?”

Even the king of vocabulary seemed momentarily stumped, prompting him to respond in Hindi:

“Bhai, aap kya kehna chahte ho?”

One user even asked Grok AI to explain the meaning of what @sagarcasm really meant, to which another user replied, “Bro, if Shashi ji doesn’t know the meaning of it, nobody knows.”
Sagar later replied to Tharoor, explaining what he was trying to say in his previous statement — but with a twist. He explained it in Hindi.

Netizens couldn’t contain their laughter at Tharoor’s brilliant comic timing. His reply alone garnered more than 6 lakh views and 14,000 likes on X. The light-hearted moment instantly went viral, with users joking that Shashi Tharoor had finally met his match.
