The main contest is drawn among Akhil Gogoi (Raijor Dal, left), Kushal Dowari of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP, centre), and Prodip Hazarika of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP, right). Interestingly, the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is featuring a friendly fight between its coalition partners, the BJP and the AGP, adding a layer of unpredictability to the race. Wikimedia Commons and X

Sivasagar, the historic Ahom-era seat in Upper Assam, is set for a high-stakes triangular clash in the 2026 Assembly polls as incumbent Akhil Gogoi of Raijor Dal faces BJP’s Kushal Dowari and AGP veteran Prodip Hazarika. The contest, shaped by NDA’s internal rivalry and a Congress–Raijor Dal alliance, will test indigenous sub-nationalism against BJP’s welfare-driven outreach.

As the April 9, 2026, Assam Legislative Assembly elections draw nearer, political parties are intensifying their rallies and election campaigns. One of the most closely watched hot seats in the state is Sivasagar (Sibsagar), where incumbent MLA and Raijor Dal President Akhil Gogoi is set to contest for a second consecutive term. While the seat will witness a battle among eight candidates, according to official data from the Election Commission of India (ECI), a high-profile triangular contest has emerged at the forefront.

A Triangular Contest And An NDA Friendly Fight

The main contest is drawn among Akhil Gogoi (Raijor Dal), Kushal Dowari of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Prodip Hazarika of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP). Interestingly, the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is featuring a friendly fight between its coalition partners, the BJP and the AGP, adding a layer of unpredictability to the race.

Akhil Gogoi is one of the three prominent "Gogois" of the Opposition-led alliance, alongside Gaurav Gogoi (contesting from Jorhat) and Lurinjyoti Gogoi of the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), who is fighting from the Khowang constituency.

The BJP's last-minute move to field Kushal Dowari has significantly altered the dynamics in Sivasagar. Dowari is a two-time former MLA from the neighboring Thowra constituency, having won the seat in 2006 and 2016. A former ULFA (United Liberation Front of Assam) member who later entered mainstream politics, Dowari's entry pits him directly against the AGP candidate and the incumbent Akhil Gogoi, turning a straight fight into a triangular one.

Meanwhile, Prodip Hazarika is a seasoned, hardline politician and a prominent figure from the historic Assam Agitation. He is a five-time MLA, having successfully represented the Amguri constituency in 1985, 1996, 2006, 2016, and 2021. Following the abolishment of the Amguri constituency during the 2023 final delimitation order in Assam, Hazarika shifted his base to Sivasagar, contesting on the AGP ticket.

The Electorate And Constituency Profile

Sivasagar is one of the most politically important constituencies in Assam, known for its deep historical roots as the erstwhile capital of the Ahom dynasty and its politically aware electorate. It is a general constituency, not reserved for Scheduled Castes (SCs) or Scheduled Tribes (STs). Located in Upper Assam, Sivasagar is predominantly composed of ethnic Assamese communities. It boasts a significant presence of the Ahom community, alongside tea garden workers and indigenous tribal populations.

Echoes Of The 2021 Elections

Akhil Gogoi originally contested the 2021 assembly elections as an Independent candidate backed by the newly formed Raijor Dal. He famously won the election from behind bars while facing charges related to the anti-CAA protests in Assam.

In that election, Gogoi secured a decisive victory with 57,219 votes (46.06%), defeating the BJP’s Surabhi Rajkonwar, who garnered 45,344 votes (36.50%). The Indian National Congress (INC) candidate, Subhramitra Gogoi, finished a distant third with 15.56% of the vote. Notably, the Congress had held the seat consecutively from 2001 to 2021 under the late Pranab Gogoi. For the 2026 elections, the Congress is banking on its alliance with Akhil Gogoi to retain the seat and possibly make a broader comeback in the state after 10 years out of power.

Experts note that the constituency represents the ideological battleground between indigenous sub-nationalism and the BJP's broader socio-political umbrella. Analysts suggest that the outcome in Sivasagar will depend heavily on whether the ruling alliance can successfully consolidate the crucial Ahom and tea tribe votes through its targeted welfare schemes and infrastructure projects, or if Akhil Gogoi can successfully retain his image as the uncompromising, independent voice of Assamese regionalism.
